The bat-wielding, profanity-spewing culprit, arrested early Sunday morning in Oriental, pleaded guilty Friday to Disorderly Conduct and Resisting a Public Officer.
District Court Judge Peter Mack sentenced Anthony Dewayne ‘Meatball’ Thomas to 48 hours of active jail time, with credit for five days already served.
In the incident, which happened in the driveway of the Oriental Woman’s Club, Thomas’ violent behavior almost netted him a jolt from a Tazer gun drawn, as a precaution, by Sgt. Bill Careway of the town’s police department.
Thomas had yet another close call Friday morning. Seconds after the decree, which included a 30-day suspended jail stay and one-year of supervised probation, Thomas uttered something under his breath that rankled Mack.
“Say anything else like that,” warned the veteran jurist, “and I’ll add in the 30 days and you will do the time.”
