Goat massacre
Bear kills quickly, may return

Brownie, the only goat to survive the bear attack.
A bear, known to frequent the gardens and yards of Cowell Loop Road near Bayboro, turned vicious Friday night, entering a large pen and killing three of four goats owned by Jason and Julie Hannah.
Apparently lured by a large sack of feed outside the pen’s six-foot tall chain link fence, the bear scaled the enclosure and wantonly attacked the goats about 10 p.m. reported Jason Hannah, who stuck his .410 shotgun through the fence and fired.

Wooster takes first at Tarpon tournament
Gene Wooster, seated, with crewmembers John Deaton and son James won first place in the Oriental Rotary Club’s 16th Annual Tarpon Tournament with a total catch of 12 tarpons.
Wooster received a check for $3060 out of the $12,555 divvied up among the winning anglers.

Geoffrey Gable of Brunswick, Ga. brought a variety of fishing poles to lure the elusive tarpon. Captain of the Damm Yankee, a Key West 225, Gable’s goal is for each of his team to catch one apiece Sunday.
Anglers tie after first day at Tarpon Tourney
George Beckwith, Matt Deaton, Charles Gribb and Gene Wooster each caught six tarpon Saturday during the Oriental Rotary Club’s 16th annual Tarpon Tournament. Beckwith lead the foursome with six jump-offs.
Pancake tarpon found the hooks of Spence Hackney, Tyler Moore and David Purifoy, each catching eight Saturday.
All hooks must be out of the water by 2 p.m. Sunday and the awards presentation begins at 4 p.m. at Whittaker Pointe Marina.
Everyone is welcome to the ceremony.

Employee hammers county
for 10,000 cell minutes

The chart shows a staggering increase in use of a county-paid cell phone by a single worker employed in the Pamlico County Water Department. This account is the most blatant abuse, which came to light after The Pamlico News analyzed cell phone records for numerous county employees.

PCC Open House

Pamlico Community College President Marion Altman, faculty advisors and staff counselors met with students, parents and community residents interested in enrolling in curriculum and continuing education courses Saturday during the college’s third Open House.
Representatives from most departments were on hand to explain course content, financial aid availability and future job opportunities.
Started in 2006, the Open House is designed to “truly open the door for people to get a better education, one that is affordable and meaningful,” said Jamie Gibbs, Dean of Student Services.
