Deja Mayfield, age 6, of New Bern, sang the National Anthem without background music or sheet music. She earned a standing ovation from the appreciative crowd.
Rev. Christopher T. Paul of Raleigh gave the keynote address. "Character is what you do when no one is looking," he said. His message stressed Purpose, Identity and Excellence.
Patrick Sloan, and English teacher at Pamlico County High School plays a "Freedom Medley" of tunes from the civil rights era.
Lee Marvin Stilley performs a step-dance routine.
Charles Willis, Jr., age 10 of Jacksonville, performed mime routines before and after Rev. Paul's speech.
